While I’m working on bigger paintings I always keep some smaller canvases kicking around. I consider them to be sketches. I use up leftover paint on these smaller ones, sometimes I experiment with an idea and it feels a little easier to take a risk. These little guys serve as a place for me to make a mistake or take a chance and usually they end up informing one of the bigger works. They free up my brain and my hand to just dig in and play a bit.

And then they kinda hang around the studio for a while and I get used to them being there. But then…the day comes and it’s time to go find a new home.
